What is a conveyor system?
Conveyor systems are a combination of different types of conveyor technology, which are used to perform a specific set of functions. Each conveyor type is used for its individual features and capabilities. For example, a roller type conveyor can be used to transport a box from “point A” to “point B”. However, a roller type conveyor is not suitable for transporting a box from a low-level position to a high-level position. Therefore, a belt type conveyor might be used. A belt type conveyor is more suitable for transporting of goods to different heights. Adopting a variety of conveyor types into a conveyor system, allows the system to perform a wide variety of functions, depending on the requirements of the situation.
Which conveyor type is best?
Many different industries use Conveyor systems in many forms. The product to be handled is the main factor in the selection of the different conveyor technologies for a system. Therefore a roller conveyor could not be used to transport sand in a quarry, as the sand would fall through the gaps between the rollers. As a result, a bulk handling belt conveyor would be used, as the belt can contain the product inside itself, and transport the sand from “point A” to “point B”.
The conveyor selection process is the same in a factory or warehouse operation. The product to be handled needs to be clearly defined, so the supplier of the system can select the right conveyor types for the application. If the design process of the system is carried out correctly, the system should function as intended. Without product jamming and the system being unavailable for production.
