How to Inspect Conveyor Systems
How to Inspect Conveyor Systems. Conveyor system inspection is an essential part of any conveyor maintenance program. A visual inspection of a conveyor system can highlight potential issues that arise from general wear and tear during the use of the system. Visual and audible checks can be carried our frequently with very little cost, and system owners can potentially save a huge amount of downtime, if the people inspecting the system know what they are looking for.
Visual checks of a conveyor system will involve walking around the system to check the general condition of the equipment. It may be quite clear in some areas that the equipment needs attention. Certain conveyors may need new components to be fitted due to damage or excessive wear, and parts like drive chains or belts may need to be re-tensioned due to stretching over time. Belts on belt conveyors can become stretched over time and can start to slip on the drive mechanism, especially on inclined or declined conveyors. They can also become frayed at the edges if operators are loading onto the belt from the side, this can also cause the belts to track off centre. Evidence of excessive wear on components may be evident in some areas due to a build up of plastic or rubber dust on the floor. This is evidence of a part wearing much faster than usual, and so action must be taken to correct the issue.
Audible checks can also be conducted when walking around the system. Rubbing or squeaking noises generally indicate that parts need lubricating or adjusting, so its always worth paying attention to even the slightest noise, as it may be an early sign that a component is failing, or simply needs adjustment. Using a cautious approach, touch is also a good method for inspection. Components such as drive motors can become very hot if they are under significant electrical load, this is a very good indication that the mechanics of the drive system are working harder than usual, and that the drive motor and gearbox should be inspected before they fail completely. Motors can become very hot, so use extreme caution when thinking about touching hot surfaces!
Whatever hardware makes up the conveyor system being inspected, it is important to have a clear inspection plan. The inspection plan will enable the person inspecting the system to document the condition of all hardware assets, and give the person a clear structure and order to walk around the system in. The inspection plan will also recommend the frequency in which the system should be inspected, with different intervals for different system components, depending on their function.
